When to use a conditioning treatment

Hair health is so important when it comes to growing luscious locks. By doing a conditioning treatment weekly you can protect and nourish your hair, keeping it healthy and strong.

It may sound obvious, but if your hair’s breaking at the ends, it will not be able to grow past a certain length. The key is using treatments and products that will help strengthen strands. It’s also important to avoid excessive heat styling (and use a heat protector spray when you do) as this can lead to damage, dryness and, ultimately, breakage. As hair isn't living tissue we can't feel if something is burning it. As a rule of thumb if the water is too hot and the hair dryer is too hot on the back of your hand it is too hot for your hair. Also, never use heated styling tools on hair that is still wet or damp. The moisture inside the hair shaft can boil causing the hair shaft to burst, forming small nodules that may eventually lead to breakage.

How to use a conditioning treatment at home:

  1. Choose a treatment that's right for your hair type. At Val Cussell Hair we offer the Authentic Beauty Concept Range which has 3 luxurious conditioning treatments: Glow, for coloured hair, Replenish for damaged hair, and Hydrate for dry or curly hair.

  2. Deep conditioning treatments work best when applied on squeaky clean hair. Cleanse your hair twice to ensure that your scalp is free of excess oil and dirt.

  3. Apply your deep conditioner to the mid lengths and ends of your hair. Gently use a wide tooth comb and comb from ends to roots to evenly distribute the product

  4. Let the conditioner soak in. We recommend leaving the treatment in for at least 10 minutes. If you want to leave it in whilst doing your chores wrap your hair in a warm microfibre towel. The warmth from the towel will help open the cuticles on the hair and let the treatment in.

  5. Rinse the hair with cooler water to enable the cuticles to close again.

  6. Let your hair air dry or use a good heat protectant (we recommend schwarzkopf’s blow and go) before blow drying.
